Top car safety features to look for when buying

There's plenty of features in a car that can keep you and your family safe when out and about, or when parked. Some features were initially introduced for convenience, like central locking while others are designed to deter thieves, like two stage unlocking. The more of these features your next car has, the greater your safety.

Here are the main safety features to look out for.

  • An interior light that activates when the doors are unlocked will let you see inside the car before you enter.
  • An interior light that activates when the ignition is switched off allows you to gather your belongings quickly before exiting.
  • Headlights (and tail-lights) that flash on when you unlock your car so you can see anyone lurking.
  • A headlight timer so the lights stay on to illuminate your path as you walk away from the car (as above).
  • A panic alert on your remote to sound the horn in case of emergency.
  • Two-stage unlocking so that you can unlock only the driver’s door if you’re alone.
  • Deadlocking so the doors can stay locked even if the window is smashed.
  • Automatic door locks that lock the doors after you drive off and unlocks them when the ignition is turned off.
  • Power windows that operate when the ignition is off.
  • Laminated side windows.
  • In-car navigation alleviates the need to leave the car to ask for directions.
  • Audible warning when you try to lock the car without closing all of the doors.
